December 2022

Welcome to the December issue of Under The Bridge, the official newsletter for Last House on the Block Society. We're late this month because we wanted to include all the photos from this year's Santa Under The Bridge project.

We started on Thursday December 1st with Supportive Housing For Young Mothers, located in Dartmouth. SHYM offers supportive housing, life skills development and parenting support for young single mothers aged 16 to 24. In addition to our regular gifts, we were able to give the clients baby blankets and knitted teddybears.

Next on the list was the Marguerite Centre in Halifax. Marguerite is a place of healing for women in recovery from addiction. This was our tenth year working with Marguerite Centre.

Also on Thursday, we visited Herring Cove Apartments, a project of Shelter Nova Scotia, a supported facility for males or gender diverse individuals experiencing long term alcohol dependence and who have a history of homelessness.

On Friday December 2nd, we visited the new Stepping Stone facility in Dartmouth North, a community outreach for persons in sex trade. That facility also will have a 4-bed transition project for which we were able to provide our afghan blankets to. This is our ninth year working with Stepping Stone.

Next on our list was Souls Harbour Rescue Mission in Halifax, a mission to help people with poverty, addiction, and despair.

Friday afternoon, we visited the Among Friends Social Club in Downtown Dartmouth, a social club for adults living with mental illness.

Saturday December 3rd, we went to two places in Halifax. The first was Caitlan's Place, a fairly new shelter for women and gender diverse persons caught up in the justice system. This was our second year helping them.

We also visited Aerobics First because of Luke MacDonald's Fit It Forward initiative where Luke tries to fit less fortunate folks with running shoes in an effort to improve foot health. We provide Luke with socks, scarves, hats, blankets which he can also give to his clients.

On Monday, December 5, we visited Feeding Others of Dartmouth, a charity that attempts to provide hot meals to persons within the community.

Monday afternoon, we visited Bryony House, a shelter for women in crisis situations. We have no photo because someone forgot his camera.

On Tuesday, December 6 we went to 2 places in Halifax. The first was Alcare Place, a facility dedicated to helping men aged 19 and over to recover from addictions.

And then we went to Direction 180, a program of the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre, a non-profit community-based opioid treatment program located in the North End of Halifax.

Tuesday afternoon, we went to the Brunswick Street Mission, an organization that seeks to provide a better quality of life in its community.

Next on our list was Laing House, a community outreach service for youth living with mental illness.

Wednesday morning, December 7, we visited the Freedom Foundation of Nova Scotia, a long term facility that helps men in the early stages of recovery from alcohol, drugs, gambling.

Wednesday afternoon, we visited Welcome Housing And Support so we could provide gifts to the residents of Amethyst Apartments, a supportive building for women.

Thursday, December 8, we did our two final deliveries. The first was to the John Howard Society, an organization providing practical mental health and social support to persons in the justice system.

And last but certainly not least, we dropped off gifts to a friend we have who is connected to the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Center which provides structured social based programming for Urban Aboriginal persons in Halifax.

And that is that for this year. Most of our knitters have already started working on next year's project.

October 2022

Welcome to the October edition of Under The Bridge, the official newsletter for Last House On The Block Society. After having survived Hurricane Fiona, we are getting ready for Santa Under The Bridge 2022.

Still a few weeks until the draw for the blanket. We managed to raise a few hundred from that so far which will help toward the cost of the supplies we usually purchase for our project.

We have another aftghan blanket crocheted by Nancy:

We also have another collaboration of Bernie & Nancy currently in progress. Bernie knits the squares, Nancy does the crochet work:

Funds have been donated from Newcomp Interiors for the purchase of thermal socks and already a hundred gift bags have been purchased, so things are well under way. We have also received donations from our usual supporters.

Welcome to the July issue. There's not a lot going on. We did manage to put together a few more blankets.

June 2022

Welcome to the June issue of Under The Bridge, the official newsletter for Last House on the Block Society. A few usual things and one or two unusual things going on. One of our long time knitters and volunteer drivers has decided to also sit on our voluntary Board of Directors. That would be Leona Riley. This brings our board tital up to seven Directors. Our maximum is eleven. We have never been at our maximum yet and seven is our usual number.

It came to our attention about the tragic fire at Souls Harbour Resucue Mission last month. Luckily, no lives were lost, but there was a lot of damage to the facility. Fortunately, the comminity  came together to assist Souls Harbour with donations of resources and time and Last House on the Block society was among those who were in a position to donate items. We donated six of our afghan blankets so that the persons using the mission as a shelter would have something to sleep under.

So, we've been busy knitting and crocheting blankets to replace the ones we donated.

We received a donation from Tony Mancini of District 6 to support our ongoing commitment to providing warm knitted clothing for the less fortunate souls in HRM and we would like to thank Mr Mancini for his assistance and support.

April 2022

Spring is in the air although the weatherman says different. We are preparing for a major snowfall, but I'm sure it won't last long. Nancy has been working on patchwork afghans. They use up all the scraps we collect from our other projects:

Plus, Nancy and Bernie have been working on collaborations where Bernie knits squares and Nancy crochets them all together:

Not much else going on.

March 2022

Welcome to the March newsletter for Last House on The Block Society. There isn't a great deal of new stuff to talk about. Nancy and Bernie are working on afghan blankets. Valerie Bates, one of knitters from Cape Breton, is working on her usual batch of scarves. Leona Riley has made some beautiful hats and headbands and a pair of mittens. Mary's mom is donating some lovely blankets. So, the inventory is starting to refill.I'll post some photos of that.....

These are Nancy's two most recent afghans. Nancy and Bernie have also collaborated on one. Bernie knitted the squares and Nancy did the crochet work. This latest one is quite colorful. The next one will be more basic.

These are the most recent hats, scarves, and headbands from Leona Riley.

The Registry has received and filed our annual financial statement so that's all taken care of.

We started a gofundme fundraiser in the hopes that we can raise $1,000 for yarn.

February 2022

First thing I should mention is that in the previous newsletter, the John Howard Society was misspelled. The typo has been corrected in that newsletter and anywhere else that it appeared. We apologize for the mistake.

Aside from that, there has been little activity since last month. We were able to prepare the annual financial statement. The document has been submitted to the Registry and we await for them to file it.

Nancy has been working on crocheted afghan blankets. She is at #4. we also have 2 that Nancy and I collaborated on.

I have 15 dish towel sets completed. I'm hoping to have 150 by the project start date.

Last year, we did acquire 3 additional organizations to donate to, bringing our list up to 19. We'd like to keep all organizations on our list.

Due to the rising number of covid cases, we are condcting our board meetings online. This month, we will be making use of Zoom video conferencing.

We hope to do more fund raising in 2022. Otherwise, we will rely heavily on donations from those in the community who support us. Time will tell. Should you wish to make a donation.....
