Santa Under The Bridge 2019

Another successful project almost completed. We still need to do Freedom Foundation and Dartmouth Shelter Society and when we do, we'll add the photos to this post. But, in the meantime, we can share the photos we already have. It wasn't looking good on Monday. One of our drivers got sick and cancelled. We had to do a bit of scrambling but we managed to pull off one delivery, well two that went to the same building.

Supportive Housing For Young Mothers and Women In Supported Housing are both initiatives of the YWCA in Halifax. We learned of their projects in 2017 and so this was our third visit to their facility.

On Day 2, we went to Margarets House Feeding Others of Dartmouth.

And also to Welcome Housing and Support which has two supervised buildings in Dartmouth - Stewart Place and Amethyst Apartments.

And the Among Friends Social Club in Downtown Dartmouth.

Wednesday, we were at Marguerite Centre

and Shelter NS (Herring Cove Apts)

We also paid a visit to Laing House in Downtown Halifax

Thursday we visited the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre on Gottingen Street

Direction 180 on Gottingen Street

Fit It Forward (Aerobics First on Quinpool)

Alcare Place on Robie Street

On Friday, we visited 3 places, Brunswick Street Mission

Stepping Stone in Halifax

and Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.

Update: Sunday December 8 saw us at Freedom Foundation of NS. They have 2 buildings now and we brought gifts for both.

November Update

November already. First things first. We have a new board member, appointed just a week ago. Her name is Tara Campbell-Sewart and I'm sure she will be a great addition to the Last House on the Block family.

We completed the second to last afghan blanket. We have one more in the works.

We have created a new page at our Weebly website. It is entitled Volunteers and it's about the people who donate their time and resources to our project.

This will be the last newsletter before the project starts this year. The start date is set for Monday, December 2. Our list of organizations this year will be:

Alcare Place,
Freedom Foundation,
Marguerite Center,
Laing House,
Direction 180
Stewart Place and Amethyst Apartments (Welcome Housing & Support Services),
Among Friends Social Club,
Feeding Others of Dartmouth,
Brunswick Street Mission,
Souls Harbour Rescue Mission,

Herring Cove Apartments (Shelter NS),
Fit It Forward.

October-ish

Not much going on in this month, although we did complete one more afghan blanket, number 10.

Number 11 is a crocheted blanket. Nancy works on that herself and we have started work on number 12, so we have a few more blankets this year than last.We have been checking our inventory and we located enough toiletry items to do us for this year. We will still need to purchase thermal socks and gift bags and xmas cards and candy canes, so there's a lot still to do before we are ready to make deliveries in December.

We would like to acknowledge a donation of yarn from Loretta.

July 2019

I'm late getting this entry posted. No excuse other than a return to the workforce. Not a lot going on with Last House on the Block. We have a few more blankets to add to the mix. Here is the one we were working on at the time of last month's newsletter.

This is the one that Nancy crocheted on her own.

And here is one we didn't actually knit. One of our knitters bought the pieces, gave them to us, Nancy sewed the strips together. I think it looks quite nice.

In other news, one of our Directors held a yard sale with all proceeds donated to Last House on the Block Society. That event brought in $150 which will be used to purchase supplies.

Nancy has been crocheting and selling dishcloths. She takes 50% of the money she brings in to purchase supplies to make more dish cloths and the rest goes into our pot. The games we donated to Dartmouth Shelter Society were paid for from the sale of dishcloths.

Some minor changes were made at our website:

https://lasthouseontheblocksociety.weebly.com/

I created 2 project pages, 1 for the Jelly Fish Babies and 1 for the Afghan Blanket Project. The Afghan Project was also renamed to the Afghan Blanket Project, obviously.

June 2019

June already. Hard to tell with all the rain. Helps the grass grow, though. Not a lot going on with us right now. Nancy and I have been working on the afghan blankets.

We have 1 more almost finished, red and purple with grey edging.

Plus, the one that Nancy is crocheting.

May 2019

Things are progressing well. Last House on the Block received some donations from members of Halifax City Council. We will be able to continue to provide our services thanks, in part, to Councillor Lorelei Nicoll of District 4, Councillor Bill Karsten of District 3 and Deputy Mayor Tony Mancini, also Councillor of District 6.

As for the afghan blanket project, we currently have 6 completed, with #7 and #8 in progress.

Scarves are on schedule, including junior scarves. We generally use about 24 of those and we're halfway there at present. Work on the blankets will ease up during the summer months and resume again during the fall.

April Update

So far, we have completed 4 afghan blankets. The first 2 were finished in February

The third blanket was the one we began last December but ran out of the edging yarn and only just completed last month. It looks kind of christmasy.

Blanket #4 uses burgundy and blue squares edged with white. And, pictured at the very bottom are two edged squares from blanket #5 which uses peach squares and yellow squares edged with forest green.

Aside from the blankets, we currently have in our inventory approximately 60 adult scarves with headbands or hats and a few junior scarves so we're pretty much on schedule. In late February we received financial support from Dartmouth Community Health Board /Nova Scotia Health Authority in the manner of $1000.00 which will, in part, fund this year's project.

We also conduct fundraisers throughout the year. In March, we sold tickets on two items, a 32 inch Haier color tv which was won by Adam Bennett and 4 Mooseheads tickets which were won by Steven Young. Sales from those tickets raised $300 for Last House on the Block Society.

New Blankets

It's February already. We have new blankets in the works. The first one we completed for this year uses peach squares and yellow squares, edged with brown.

Next in the list is a blanket using peach squares and mauve squares edged with yellow.  It's quite a way from completion, but here are what the squares look like:

We have a third in progress that we began last December. We ran out of the joining yarn and it's very hard to find, but once we get some more we'll post a photo of the completed blanket.
