Santa Under The Bridge Part Two

Today we finished our deliveries for Santa Under The Bridge. The cover photo for this post was taken on Thursday December 7 at Scotiabank in Mic Mac Mall where our project received a donation of children's gifts.

Earlier in the week we had visited Laing House in downtown Halifax.

and Direction 180, a facility we have been visiting since the start of our project, in 2013.

On Wednesday, our elves stopped by the soup kitchen in downtown Dartmouth, Feeding Others Of Dartmouth, and brought a few sacks of goodies.

And also, on Thursday, after our trip to Scotiabank, we visited the Among Friends Social Club in Dartmouth.

Finally, on Friday, we finished our deliveries with a visit to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Stepping Stone community outreach, and Brunswick Street Mission.

All totaled, it was a fantastic week. Over a dozen volunteers got together and most of them wore Santa suits. As usual, the organizations we visited greeted us with the warmth and the laughter we have come to expect, and we are all blessed to have been a part of this.

Santa Under The Bridge 2017

This year's project is about halfway completed. In the photo above, we are at Marguerite Centre in Timberlea. We were there Sunday afternoon. Also on Sunday, we visited Herring Cove Apartments, a facility of Shelter NS.

On the previous Saturday, we checked in to Alcare Place and the Fit It Forward initiative at Aerobics First.

 Alcare Place

Aerobics First

Earlier in the week, we dropped off gifts for the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Center:

and also at Supportive Housing for Young Mothers:

We began this year's project by going to Freedom Foundation of NS:

and we stopped by Metro NonProfit Housing with gifts for 2 of their facilities.

As you can see, we had our usual amount of fun dressing up like Santa. we still have about 8 places to visit before this year's project ends so there will be more pics to come. Stay tuned!

Fund-raising Events in October

October is just around the corner. Last House on the Block Society has a few fundraising events. We will be conducting 2 separate fundraising draws. We are currently waiting on the permit numbers for those. We expect to have those by October 1st and we will post the license numbers at our facebook pages.

One of the draws is another 50/50 money board draw with a maximum prize of $500. The other draw will be on an afghan blanket knitted by Bernie and Nancy.

Tickets on the afghan will be $1.00. On the 50-50 draw, there are 100 squares at $10 each. If we sell all the squares, we bring in $1000. So it is possible to win $500. As mentioned, both those draws will be conducted next month, after the lottery licenses have been acquired.

We will also have a table at the upcoming craft fair at:

In addition to our usual items we sell at those events such as jellyfish or dish cloths or hot pads

you should be able to purchase tickets on the draws at this event. So October looks like a busy month for us.

Santa Under The Bridge 2017

It's still September. The sun is shining. The AC is on in the office. But, those of us who live in the Maritimes know that soon the temperature will start to drop and it won't be long before we break out the scarves and other items of winter wear.

With that in mind, we start making ready for this year's Santa Under The Bridge project. Our volunteers have been knitting all year and they have created some beautiful scarves, hats, headbands and wristbands. Also included with the ladies gift bags will be an item of jewelry. Every bag gets a few personal care items, a Christmas card and hopefully some candy canes. Our volunteers will dress up in Santa outfits when we make our deliveries, usually during the first week of December

Our list for 2017 includes:

Among Friends Social Club
Brunswick Street Mission
Souls Harbour Rescue Mission
Shelter NS (Herring Cove Apts)
Metro Non Profit Housing (Stewart Place & Amethyst Apartments)
Laing House
Feeding Others of Dartmouth
Stepping Stone
Direction 180
Supportive Housing For Young Mothers
Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Center
Margeurite Centre
Alcare Place
Freedom Foundation
Fit It Forward
and Club 24

Mother's day 50/50 Draw

Today, we held the 50/50 draw in support of Last House on the Block Society. The winner was Leona Murphy. She happened to be at the coffee shop where we conducted the draw and we were able to present Mrs. Murphy with a check for $500. We also raised $500 for our Santa Under The Bridge project, so we feel the fundraiser was a huge success and we plan to do a few more the same way. Congratulations to Mrs. Murphy and a big Thank You to everyone who sold a ticket or bought a ticket.

Spring is In The Air

On Saturday, May 6, two of our volunteers will set up a table at the Mothers Day Craft and Vendor Show at the Lawrencetown Community Center. That event runs from 9am-3pm. We would appreciate seeing you there.

On Mothers Day itself, we will conduct a 50/50 draw in support of Last House on the Block Society. If you would like to get in on the action, there's still 9 days to do that.We have it set up as a facebook event, but basically this is what is happening. We have a board of 100 numbered squares. Each square sells for $10. You can select a number of your choice, if it hasn't already been selected, or you can just let us select a random number. On the draw date, we will pick a numbered square and the winner gets half the take, Obviously, the maximum payout is $500.
